Make Peanut Butter at Home in Three Simple Steps

Until you taste peanut butter that you’ve made yourself from scratch, you won’t realize just how much extra sugar and salt is added to the peanut butter you buy at the store. Peanuts are a good source of healthy fats, but when you eat peanut butter that contains a lot of additives in it, that’s as good as a “healthy choice” gone horribly wrong.

With this recipe, you’ll learn how to make your peanut butter at home, right from preparing the main ingredient – the peanuts (or you could buy them, keeping in mind that most packaged peanuts still contain additives, which defeats the whole purpose of the recipe).

Making your own peanut butter is as easy as adding the nuts into your blender or food processor and blending until you get the ready peanut butter in your desired consistency.

Here's how to make your own:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb. (approx. 450 g) raw peanuts, shelled
  • ½ tsp. salt, to taste
  • 2 tsp. honey, to taste (optional)
  • 2 tsp. sunflower oil*

* If you choose not to use raw peanuts, you don’t need to add any oil.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F (approx. 175° C). Spread the peanuts on a baking sheet and place them in the oven. Roast for 10 – 15 minutes or just until they begin to turn brown. Once they’re ready, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool down slightly.
  2. Place the peanuts, salt, and honey all at once in a blender or food processor, and blend for 20 seconds.
  3. While the blender or food processor motor is still running, add in the oil through the chute. Keep blending for another 30 seconds, then stop and check for seasoning. If needed, add a little more salt and/or honey, then keep blending for approximately another 30 – 40 seconds or until you reach your desired consistency, and you’ll get ready butter.

EXTRA NOTES

  • You can buy and use already packaged peanuts for this recipe, but note that store-bought peanuts might have more-than-required additives that defeat the purpose of the recipe.
  • Make sure that you use fresh peanuts or you will end up getting peanut butter with a "funny" taste.
  • If you'd like your peanut butter to be crunchy, you want to stop processing before it’s moving freely through the machine’s blades.
